Super excited about Playboy's amazing partnership with the Blonds at NYFW!

David and Phillipe Blond, the insanely talented design duo, presented their Spring 2012 collection inspired by Playboy

The masters of the new American corset paid homage to the original American corset (The Playboy Bunny costume) by creating various interpretations and brand new versions for Spring.

Hard to narrow it down to one favourite piece, but i have to say I especially loved Phillipe's Diamond Bunny corset that closed the show

The front row was packed with a slew of celebs/Blonds fans including Kat Graham, Porcelain Black, Pat Fields, Amanda LePore, and my personal fav Johnny Weir

I just want to start out by saying this post isn't a typical one. It doesn't include tips for the sexiest summer lingerie or the new it-spot to find a sugarfree martini. It isn't fun, but it is more than necessary.

My childhood friend Trisha Sadler was violently murdered by her nine year boyfriend in her Bethlehem, PA home last friday. I don't wish to recount the graphic details, but the local authorities and co-workers have revealed that she had been in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend for several years. She apparently instructed co-workers to call the police if she didn't show up to work as he had previously threatened to kill her.

When my other childhood friend, Erin, called me this week to inform me we both stayed on the phone for what felt like hours silenced from shock. Erin and I have remained friends since the days of playing in our yard in Carlisle, Pennsylvania but both of us had lost contact with Trisha over the years as her family had moved from the neighborhood when we were still in middle school.

Trisha was an extremely caring and generous young girl. It seems like only yesterday that she was patiently helping me and several other younger girls with cheerleading routines as we struggled to remember all the positions that she had gracefully mastered. Trisha loved everything girly and glamourous -we used to play with her Barbies and paint each others nails in her bedroom for hours. The below photo is the two of us performing Material Girl in dresses from my mom's closet.

I had always assumed she would grow up to be an amazing choreographer or esthetician, get married, have children and live happily ever after. I never expected to hear the devestating news I recieved this Monday morning. In an effort to express our love and to honor Trisha's memory, Erin and I have been searching for a memorial service or a location to send tokens of our sympathy.

As we've been unable to locate any information so far (if anyone reading this has any additional info please contact me directly) In the meantime we have come up with an alternate plan. We have donated directly to the National Coalition against domestic violence in Memory of Trisha Sadler, and we encourage you to do the same:

Sleep No More: an amazing NYC play/adventure

So last week when a friend of ours, affectionately known as "Culture Christy" sent out an invite to attend this "west chelsea independent play" I just said sure and didnt really know what I was in for. A few days later, my friend Michelle (who had actually clicked on the link in the email) said "This looks AH-MAZING" I decided to do some background research. One Gothamist article
(http://gothamist.com/2011/03/28/how_to_get_the_most_out_of_sleep_no.php#photo-4) provides tips for the experience including:
- smoking weed before hand may increase the experience
-Bring cash for the caberet bar
- you are required to wear masks so this may be tricky if you wear glasses

Umm masks and a caberet bar YES PLEASE

*Thank god I prepared my outfit to match the white masks i had read about!* however when you look out into the "audience" it can be quite terrifying:

The play takes place in the McKittrick-an abandoned 3 story west chelsea hotel. It's kind of a mix between an extremely well produced haunted house (think entering The Shining) and an interactive theatre production of Macbeth...

I would DEFINITELY recommend going to see this before the production leaves New York (May 7th)

+I LOVED the set design (very authentic and detailed 1930s design in each and every room) You can touch and explore all items, search drawers and follow the actors around the hotel.

+The cabaret bar was amazing and felt like stepping into another era with a live band and old fashioned cocktails

-On the down side (or upside depending on whether you are going solo or not) it is hard to stay together in a group and members can get separated- you are given playing cards when you enter and must start off in the first elevator with like #s. However if you do go with friends, you're likely to all each experience different performances and rooms that you can meet back and share (Michelle saw a baby-eating rave that i somehow missed out on!)

-The play was a bit "harvest, harvest" for me (much like Smith Jerrods "Full Moon" Brooklyn play in Sex and the City Season 6 episode 5 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVJEmPV2GuE) and I didn't really understand what the hell was going on...although i guess if your super familiar with Macbeth -like my drama major fiance, it was somewhat relevant ;)

Last Thursday we attended another amazing opening gala at the Museum of Sex, The Nudie Artist: Burlesque Revived.
We attended the event with friends Jason and Trey, lovelywanderlust.com bloggers Emily and Abigail and fierce Burlesque performers Pink Champagne and Lady Chardonnay.

Definitely worth checking out as they have a vast collection of artwork and photographs documenting Burlesque from the "golden era" of the 1930s to neo-burlesque performers of today.

AMAZING monthly jazz night in midtown

It's no secret that I LOVE LOVE LOVE any event that requires a costume, but Club Wit's End monthly jazz party at Flutes Champagne bar in midtown is one of the best theme parties I've been to in New York.

Anne, Jason and Trey and I arrived wondering if (as usual) we would be a tad over-dressed and over zealous...but much to our suprise the entire speak-easy style lounge looked like we had been transported to a different era. The gentlmen all sported bowties and tuxes while the ladies had the fiercest furs and headpieces ive ever seen under one roof!

they have dance lessons cooresponding to the month's theme at 8:30- this month was the charleston, next month will be tap to celebrate Fred Astaire :)

This Saturday was Academy Award themed so they also hosted a costume contest which I won with my handcrafted pearly ensemble !!

April is rumored to be Marlene Dietrich month (perfect for Anne!)

Eye Patches- the new fashion accessory for Spring?

God, I hope so! So after a crazy eye injury wednesday night -
I literally sprang out of bed at 2:30 AM from a dream that a crazy b*tch in a forrest stabbed me with a shard of glass, only to find out the pain remained (Freddy Kruger victim-style) and my eye was insanely red, swollen and tearing...

Anne made me go the hosital- another drama in itself as apparently 3am is crackhead o'clock at Beth Israel (the gentleman next to us with his fly down begged for Tuna and Viagra from a nurse) I didn't need either, just for someone to look at my eye. Hours later we gave up and went home, only to return to a dr the next morning. I was diagnosed with a Corneal Abrasion and given prescription drops... but I was also told not to wear eye makeup for 48 hrs- Egads!

With several upcoming events I've done some research...namely, googling "sexy eyepatch" here is what i've found:

Cruise to Nowhere

This may be on the best and cheesiest date idea we've ever come up with! In a constant strive to discover new and innovative date venues, this valentine's weekend Anne and I boarded Norwegian Gem's "Cruise To Nowhere". The cruise ship, which can hold up to 2,394 passengers takes off from a mid town pier (boarding available from 12pm onward on the departure date) and returns the following morning.

for those of you who want all the crazy kitchy perks of a cruise (including a bowling alley, casino, arcade, theater, duty free shopping and unlimited food all under one gigantic roof) but don't think you could handle an actual long term version - this is for you....

Cheaper than a five star hotel and surprisingly fun- Anne and I highly recommend it.

Comic Stripped- Great Winter date

The winter months and brutal cold can tempt even the most cosmopolitan girl to stay in an hibernate. If you're like me and are struggling with the bleak winter weather but still want to be out having fun in the city- the Museum of Sex on 5th Avenue is host to a great new (indoor!) date venue:

The museum's latest exhibit, Comic-stripped consists of 150 pieces includingL drawings, illustrated
books, comic books, magazines, and videos that have used animated characters to explore American sexuality. The artifacts range from "dirty drawings" that were prohibited in the Depression to American icons of today (ie Marge simpson on the cover November 2009 Playboy). My personal favourite piece was Paul Krassner's 1967 parody "The Disneyland Memorial" which was also used as a wallpaper back drop for one of the exhibits main wall.

I definitely recommend checking it out the exhibit is open now at the Museum of Sex:

We had thought about Madonna aliens but the metallic green makeup didnt work well with Anne's American Life Camo costume

After attending the parade and going to a few bars in the village with our friends we dashed home for costume change #3 and headed to the midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show

Anne was the most amazing Riff Raff in the entire world! This is why I am marrying this woman ;)

Best Weekend EVER

So as most of you know I proposed to Anne this summer with an elaborate nervewracking day of suprises. I should have known that Anne would want no less for me as well!!

I was in LA for work 2 weeks ago and came back at the end of the week to find that Anne had woken up early Saturday morning to go to the farmers market- a usual Sat AM occurence. She left me a a bottle wrapped in pink sparkly paper. ( I thought this was possibly a well timed gift of extra stength midol as i was experiencing the Freddy Krueger stabbing cramps that day) But when I opened the sparkly bottle there was a sterling silver "pill" with a message inside that read "Get ready for the best weekend of your life" next to a jewelry box- was it my engagement ring??!! Even though I proposed to Anne everyone knows that I wanted a sparkly accessory to mark this commitment also ;)

I opened the box and it was diamond hoop earrings- FAKEOUT - but such amazing earrings that there was no way I could possibly be dissappointed!
I continued to get dressed and Anne came home to tell me she was taking me to brunch-please pack:

-Mary Kate perfume (my signature scent)

"Why do I need eyeliner? Why do I need Mary Kate- is SHE going to be there???!"
"you NEVER know" Anne said

I packed all the above- incredibly confused and headed downstairs for brunch

When we arrived at the mystery location -Asiate, The Mandarin Oriental 35th floor restaraunt
I spotted my 2 besties: Jason and Oz!!

Bob Saget ironically sat down at the table next to ours...(Jason tried to not so slyly get a picture but did not succeed)

Though I remained hopeful: Mary Kate did NOT arrive.

But not even MK could top a fancy brunch with Anne and my fav boys!!! After that we did a little Upper West Side shopping!!

After harrassing anne with a million questions she told me she was taking me for manicures next (ooo manicures! i'm going to get my ring today that's gotta be why!)

After we walked into the salon, my other bestie Jackie (aka Yetta G) showed up to join us!!! OMG best day ever- its impossible to get all your New Yorker friends together in one weekend let alone in the same spot.

After our manicures and pedicures with Ms Yetta G anne said she had reservations for us to "Grab a drink downtown."
We arrived at the Ritz battery park and had a glass of champagne. When Anne grabbed the check she said "Just put this on the room"

SO EXCITED!!!

We went upstairs to a GORGEOUS suite with a wall ceiling to floor view of the Statue of Liberty and a closet had been filled with new shoes and a dress for me to wear to dinner.

I started crying I was so touched and overwhelmed!! After I calmed down I realized what the eyeliner, and perfume were for (still didnt understand bananagrams) but realized that I still needed a few other things at the drugstore- I didn't pack my coldsore medicine-and feared the excitement of the day could cause an evil intruder!
( yup thats right...ever since I was little thanks to my mom and my big sis I've been cursed with coldsores)

We headed to the closest pharmacy before dinner. As we walked back to the hotel along the water I looked at the statue of liberty and told Anne
"usually I don't like waterviews, but I love the statue of liberty... I mean that's what my polish immigrant great grandparents first saw when they came over- maybe thats where the herpes came from? that sucks... anyway... usually I dont want to look at Brooklyn or New Jersey I want to look at MANHATTAN (gesturing vehemently to the edge of the island) THIS is where COOL begins and ends- right here. But I do love this view of the statue of liberty- where it all began!!"

And before I knew what was happening Anne pulled out the sparkliest ring ever and said "and thats why I want to spend the rest of my life with you- here on this island"

I was so shocked- (and a little embarrased for my inappropriate Manahattan-elite rant timing and the herpes/immigrant schpeel) but ecstatic!!!
We headed back to the hotel where Anne told me we should stop on the club level lounge for a glass of champagne to celebrate. When we arrived we saw our favourite couple Mel and Amy!! They, along with Jason had been the secret elves who brought the clothes and champagne to our suite in advance.- I love our friends!!

Mel & Amy took us out to a delicious dinner and then returned to the club lounge for more champagne and our favourite game Banagrams (yes we are super edgy ladies)

The next day after we checked out Anne told me we had early dinner plans at 4pm- i could not take any more suprises so I harrassed her for the details of who would be there? what should I wear? Will they come back to the apartment? should we tidy up???

I still had no idea who was going to be there but I suspected perhaps Jason, Oz and our posse of fab chelsea boys..but instead it Annes family all the way from New Jersey and my ENTIRE family from Pennsylvania...including my favourite niece, wearing pink leopard just for the occasion!

After dinner we headed around the corner to where all of our friends met up with us for a final congratulatory drink. It was the best weekend of my life. Not just because of the most sparkly ring in the whole world, but because of how much thought and love Anne put into planning it and because everyone I loved was able to share the celebration with us.

I am so grateful for all the incredible people in my life and especially to Anne for always making me feel surrounded in love :)
Oh yeah- and for immigrants and herpes;)

Like a Reverend

As many or you know I got ordained this spring in order to officiate my bff's wedding in Toronto last weekend. I was incredibly nervous, though i'm relatively comfortable with performing. It's always been a part of my routine whether at work in design presentations, in my old days as Toronto's premiere female-female impersonator....but this was different. It was someone else's big day! two of my best friends none the less.

The ceremony turned out beautifully- the bride and groom wrote their own vows which left everyone attending in tears and their friend/nyc musician Joanna Levine played a gorgeous version of the Beach Boy's God Only Knows while the bride walked down the isle.

Some tips I have for any other first time reverends out there:
1) PRE-GAME as always- practice practice practice.

2) Props are fun AND useful. I pasted my notes into a black leather bound Playboy notebook-official looking AND helpful and my white lace gloves made me feel totes legit!

3) When in doubt focus on the couple- I love those mofos so much, and they looked SO happy to be getting married that I knew I had to do a good job for them

4) If possible- bring your best friend and biggest supporter with you!

As for my absentee September- it's been a crazy month! Last Wednesday I competed in Regis and Kelly's High-heel-athon in Central Park. All decked out in my sparkliest I was prepared to win big.

But let me tell you there are some FAST b*tches in that race. I didn't win... THIS time, but I did recieve a jazzy "Finisher" medal and we all know how I LOVE flair! This is actually my very first piece of athletic flair so that in itself seems like quite an accomplishment.

I was also proud of the fact that though Kristin Chenoweth started 3 rows ahead of me, I managed to fly past the tiny diva, which I realized as I excitedly made rabbitears with my fingers as I passed the finished lines and a man from ABC grabbed me. I screamed and he said into his walkie talkie "Nevermind- NOT her, just another tiny sparkely blonde." Obviously flattered as a huge fan of Kristin's but startled none the less.

Though I am proud of 1) not falling and 2) my fancy finisher medal...I do plan to train harder for next years race!!

Material Girl Clothing Launch at Macy's NYC

Madonna and her daughter Lourdes launched their clothing line ever-so-appropriately titled "Material Girl" at Macy's this tuesday.
Naturally I was one of the first in line to get my hands on the goods!!

Waiting in line was made much more pleasant than ever with the presence of:
1) a pink carpet and pink velvet ropes (a necessity for any premiere event)
2) Madonna look-alikes walking back and forth with boomboxes blaring her 80s hits
3) free giveaways from personalized "Material Girl" sunglasses to cupcakes

Once inside, I naturally attempted to buy everything!!

And made out like a bandit with 3 gorgeous dresses, a studded embellished miniskirt, sequin tap pants and some awesome jewelry all for under 200.00!!!

As for the Cupcake Scandal (Yes, I recieved a few emails from individuals who had seen these associated press photos asking ARE YOU OFF CARBOLA??! DID YOU EAT SUGAR IN THE NAME OF HER HOLINESS?)

Truth be told I graciously accepted the cupcake, which was decorated beautifully with the pink "Material Girl" logo, from a Madonna doppleganger. I gave it to my fiance along with a buttondown from the collection. But I did have a tiny taste- and yes- it was just as heavenly as I imagine Madge's lips to be!

I did it!!!
Proposed that is! Sorry for my lack posts in the month of July but I had a lot of planning and pre-gaming to do...Not only was I about to ask the most important question of my life to my lady, but this Type-A chica wanted to plan AND execute it perfectly!

My original idea had been to take Ms. Anne to Paris, the city of Amor. She has never been, but has wanted to visit more than anywhere in the world since she was a teenager.

But then, in true Becca style, I had a little TOO much fun at our Christmas party:

And after too many glasses of x-mas champagne the subject of an engagement came up, and I proceeded to tell her in DETAIL, down to the hotel name, just how I planned to propose in gay Pareee.....

So- I had to revise my plan:

As many of you know, Anne has written 3 novels but has not published them yet. As a surprise, I designed a cover for her first book and self-published and printed it. On one copy, where the description would normally go, I instead placed a message from me ending in "Will you marry me?" I planned to plant it in our neighbourhood bookstore. I hired a band to play our song outside the bookstore and planned, along with my bestie, an elaborate congratulations suprise dinner party. And intended to top it off with an early birthday/congratulations present of 2 first class tickets to paris for 5 days over her birthday.

But even the best pre-gamers cannot plan for EVERYTHING :)

9:00am: we woke up and made breakfast at home. My original plan of brunching and shopping in the city as an instrument to get my lady to Barnes and Noble were foiled by
A) the 200 degree heat
B) Anne's lack of enthusiasm due to a rough work week
C) Anne's slight hangover from a friday night out with friends the night before

This was going to be tougher than I thought....

As the day progressed from an air conditioned day in the apartment to Anne's idea of "what if we paint the living room today?!"
I started to panic....

So by 3pm I decided I would have to remix this yet again, Junior Vasquez style:
I said "Babe, would it cheer you up if I gave you your bday present early?"
"You don't have to do that" She responded
"Oh I think I do" I said as I handed her a box wrapped in Madonnas sexy black and white photos from the latest Interview magazine.

Anne carefully opened the box with the ticket, hotel and trip details. She looked at me dumbfounded and asked "Is this for
REAL?"
"Of course, I wouldn't FAUX give you a trip to paris!"
"We have to go to the Barnes and Nobel! To get city guides!! Oh my god Oh my god We're going to Paris!" she squealed

As I went to bathroom, Anne reached into my bag to grab my phone to call her mother to tell her about her early birthday gift as her phone had died. This lead to an accidental glance at her book's cover. I walked out at the same moment and clenched my chest.

"I might have seen something I wasn't supposed to..." Anne said looking stunned and sheepish.
"Uhh, ok.. lets just still go to the barnes and noble"

(Luckily anne had only seen the cover, not the back with the proposal message)
After a very awkward walk there we finally arrived Anne spotted the band holding orange roses (her favourite) and sarcastically asked "Are those for me?"
"NO!" I shouted awkwardedly. "Jeez isn't PARIS enough!" I giggled.

We walked up to the travel section to look at Paris books, and I continued with my plan of slipping Anne's book onto a shelf when she wasn't looking. She picked it up- still stunned that her book had been printed. When she turned it over she was floored. I got down on my knee right there in the barnes and noble and pulled out a diamond ring in a nut shell box (Anne loves a good pun) and said "I'm nuts about you. Will you marry me?"

She said yes and got down on the floor with me hugging me and picking me up to my feet. *
*She doesn't remember this part as she said she was so stunned and ecstatic that she blacked out for a good portion of the book store.

She does however clearly remember walking out to a band playing "Such Great Heights" and handing her a bouquet of orange roses.
"OH MY GOD! They WERE for me!" she laughed

Now all I had to do was to get her to the restaraunt below our apartment to meet "friends" for a small dinner. I thought I was finally in the clear until one of my besties, Oz, who hadn't read the invitation clearly, showed up at our buildings entrance INSTEAD of the restaraunt with presents in hand.

"OZ!" I exclaimed agressively, "What are you doing here?"
"Ummm I'm headed to a...babyshower?"
"A babyshower at 8 o clock at night?" Anne asked "Who had a baby?"
"Ya know....straight people" he answered awkwardedly
"well we better get into the RESTAURANT where we're meeting our friends for dinner" I practically shouted at the poor boy

I pulled Anne in and said I was pretty sure they must already be there, probably seated in the back.
Luckily she bought it and all her friends and family jumped out on cue, yelling "Surprise!"

It was the best day ever. Nothing makes me happier than seeing the love of my life happy. She was glowing. I would do it all over EXACTLY as it happened because sometimes the little monkey wrenches in a perfect plan are what makes the actual event that much more fun :)

Long Weekend in the City

So for the first time in a very long time my partner and I were going to be in our favourite spot for a long weekend:Manhattan. I decided to surprise her with a gorgeous new 1950s style bathing suit and a gift card that read "for where I'm taking you this weekend" with a picture of the Hotel Gansevoort's pool. She was ecstatic and we trekked the 5 blocks to our "staycation" Saturday afternoon....

Now for those of you outside NYC this probably sounds excessively ridiculous, but let me explain: Unless you want to take your chances at public pool or happen to have a gym membership that includes outdoor pool access, there are very few pools you can lounge by on the island of Manhattan. The Gansevoort is supposedly the best....

Let me tell you friends- I don't recommend this venue. First of all, we arrived an hour past check in and our room was not ready. We were told to wait at the rooftop bar/pool (without comped drinks or snacks) after an hour+ we returned to the concierge and requested a refund as we'd decided just to head home. They gave us a large discount on the rate so we stayed. We returned to the pool area to find it overrun with too many bachelorette parties to count and drunk singing irish-men with guitars...we felt a little ridiculous with our magazines and travel scrabble but made the best of it.

For any of you readers looking for some Manhattan pool action I would recommend the much less "sceney" Empire Hotel on the upper west side, or if your looking for a more serious commitment, a membership at the Soho House- where there is an unwritten precedent against Bachelorette parties.

We still had an awesome weekend- saved by the Radio City Glee concert on Sunday where Anne and I arrived as Rachel Berry and a very pregnant Quinn Fabrae

When two of my best friends got engaged and asked me to officiate their wedding ceremony I was ecstatic...and a little nervous. But I did what I always do in nerve-wracking situations: ask myself the inevitable: WWMD?

For those of you who know me personally you probs know about my love hate relationship with my gun heeled pumps.
On the upside, they are super sexy and definitely an attention grabber. They also comfort me when I have fleeting thoughts of zombie attacks (as pictured). On the otherhand they are not for a frequent flying femme! I learned this when I was rudely pulled out of a security line at O' Hare, taken to an american airlines security room, photographed (and told that it was 'ok because my eyes would be blacked out' Helllooo i at least want the free publicity...sheesh), and then had my fav shoes confiscated and checked!

I was recently looking for a cute wine and appetizer spot to take my mom and godmother before our dinner reservation. As much as I'm a huge advocate of super romantic dinners and perfectly planned gifts, I've recently realized that sometimes words are worth a thousand presents.

Over the holidays I gave my mother an adorable winter coat. She loved it and it fit perfectly. My mom put it on and smiled as she zipped it up, she knew it suited her and that she looked great...Until my dad walked in and said : "Really? That looks at least a size too small for you." (Important side note: my father thinks fleece camoflage pants are haute couture)

I was really bummed out by this because:
1) Selfishly, I had picked out and given her this coat and
2) My mom is a really pretty and stylish lady who looks great in all her clothes but this comment completely changed her mood. He took the "I feel pretty" out of her step and it showed instantly.

Another friend of mine recently recounted a nervous third date when she decided to step outside her comfort zone and wear a sexy La Perla garter belt and thigh highs sans underwear. In the heat of the moment her boyfriend looked confused instead of gratefully surprised and asked, "You came over here like that?! I mean you sat in the subway in your dress without underwear?" Needless to say he completely killed the mood along with any future lingerie endeavors his date may have wanted to try.

My girlfriend's and my style could not be more opposite. I own enough feathers and rhinestones to outfit an entire cast of Vegas showgirls while she gravitates toward crisp button downs and Brook Brothers Oxfords. But even though I probs wouldn't love a plaid button down shirt on a hanger, I think it looks stunning on her. Mostly because she is the most gorgeous girl in the world, but more importantly because I can see that she FEELS adorable in it...

Similarly she gets that I shine in a corseted dress and thigh high Christian Louboutin boots ( <--my xmas gift from her!!) And tells me I look beautiful...even though this look anywhere else might remind her of a deranged pirate.

So please, make sure to compliment your lady when she looks good. And even if you may not always get what she's going for, try your best to be supportive when she's rocking a questionable look she FEELS good in. (Added bonus: you're way more likely to score if she feels sexy AND hears that you think she is too)

It has been way too long my dears...

Perhaps because I was busy trying to convince myself I could temporarily live in Chicago...and after that, perhaps I was too busy plotting my move back. I followed my career to Chicago and in doing so left behind the two loves of my life: my girlfriend Anne and Manhattan. After a very long six months I decided I needed to return to my leading ladies...and thank Madge, my hard work paid off. I've kept my position and am working out of a delicious pink home office in our new apt in Chelsea that my girlfriend painted especially for my return!!

Now that I'm back where I belong promise to be better at getting you romantic, pink sparkly posts on a regular basis.

So my hipster-ific friend went to this in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in June and said it was AMAZING. Though I'm not much of a hipster I am excited to check out the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago. The store which spans the width of the block between mercer and broadway just north of broome street, is a combination of a swarovski retailer and lounge/cafe.

How to throw a geek-alicious bday party

Ok so as many of you may already know my partner in crime and love of my life is a bit of a Potter nerd. I scoffed at her HP fetish when we first started dating, but I have to admit, she's even managed to suck me into this crazy world of wizardry.

When Aug 16th was coming close I knew I had to do something above and beyond our usual fancy dinners and romantic outings...I had to get my geek on!

I rewatched a couple of the movies for the details need to make apartment into a mini Hogwarts. First I made an "invitation" back to school and placed it in my mailbox. I picked my lady up from the airport and when we arrived at my front gate I asked her to check the mail for me. She opened up the invite and was delighted. There were Hogwarts coloured balloons (maroon and gold) the whole way to my front door where we found a picture of the Fat Lady with a note addressed to Anne. The note said that her birthday celebration was in the "grand hall" (formally my dining room- complete with floating candles and broomstick- fishing wire does wonders, friends!!) and her presents were in "Diagon Alley," aka my fireplace

She loved it and said that the thought and crazy details (I even made licorice wands and butter beer. It turns out there are a lot of potter-geeks online with great recipes!) made this her favourite present.

And the added bonus: It was sooo much fun to plan and create! There is nothing better than surprising the one you love and thinking of new and creative ways to make her happy. I highly recommend finding the quirky little things your lady loves and making a super nerdy and sweet theme date out of them :)

I love romantic surprises...planning them, giving them, recieving them...I live for it.
That's why I find it so sad when friends of mine complain about how rarely their boyfriends, husbands etc take the time to put together thoughtful little gifts.

The thing is...while lavish amounts of money are unnecessary...it is more than just the thought that counts. It's the execution. It's super easy (and annoyingly lazy) to tell your lady about what you had "thought" about doing/planning/buying... it takes a true romantic to follow through and DO it.

My girlfriend and I have both been intensely busy with our respective careers in addition to a summer full of travelling. I'm meeting her family at their summer home in Hilton head this weekend so she made me a power point brochure of all the fun things she has planned for us when I arrive. She sent it to me with a very 'effortless-oh-here-go' nonchalantness, but I was blown away by how thoughtful and creative this was! Naturally I made all my co-workers rush over to look at it/brag :)

Similarly when she was having a bad day on Monday I overnighted her childhood favourite book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day to her office...with some hand written revisions I had added in especially for her. She loved this more than any designer garment I've ever gotten her.

So get creative guys...you might be surprised at how much fun you have doing it!

As the seasons begin to change a lot of my friends and co-workers seem to be suffering from some nasty ailments...If your lady is under the weather creativity is key.

A good friend of mine recently came down with mono, and between her mini-comas her fiance cooked up all her favourite snacks and served them to her in bed while playing her favourite movies.
Another girl I know just experienced a horrible coldsore episode(like zombies attacked her upper lip.) When she came home exhausted and feeling less than sexy from a dr's appointment her girlfriend suprised her with dinner from her favourite restaurant, cabernet (with a straw naturally) and ridiculous matching stick-on mustaches as a temporary fix.

I recently got back from leading a week long creative conference in Germany. I returned home ecstatic to see my girlfriend but a little jet-lagged and overworked (with additional travel planned for the following week).

I walked into my place to find her waiting with champagne, a spotless apartment, a completely stocked fridge with all my favourite goodies, my drycleaning picked up and hung, and my favourite necklace straight from Tiffany's, where it had been cleaned and polished. All the little things that become a strain when you find yourself hopping from one plane to the next had miraculously been taken care of for me before I could even begin planning how to start the first on the list. I was blown away...even I could not have planned such a thoughtful and flawlessly executed surprise...

And then, just as I regained my composure...I found a gorgeous Hello Kitty (one of my fave icons of all time) painting in my bedroom that my girlfriend had a NYC pop artist create specifically for me!

In less than five minutes all the stress of work, travelling and my upcoming schedule melted away because I felt so completely taken care of.

You know that super seductive Victoria's Secret Christmas commercial with the tagline "Give me everything I want and nothing I need..." It's brilliant because: obviously it's sexier to recieve the decadent things you crave than necessecities... But I've recently found that the SEXIEST gift is a creatively planned combination of BOTH...

Bunnies Take...Chicago

So as you may have noticed my posts in March were few and far between...I promise not to make a habit of this but the past months have been a bit intense!!

For starters: I found out I'll be moving to Playboy's original home in Chicago for a little while to lead our design team from there, got a fab. new apartment and went down a jean size.

And last, but certainly not least, I have fallen deeply, madly, hopelessly in love ('Made it through the wilderness...didn't know how lost I was until I found you' styles) with a woman who loves New York, Madonna, time management and romance as much as I do!!

At first I was completely overwhelmed... I had grown very comfortable with my role as the date planner, gift giver, door and bag holder and never realized that BOTH parties in a relationship could successfully fulfill this position. Finding this romantic and exhilarating two-way street may be my greatest recommendation of all...(*Unfortuately I don't have the street address and phone number for this one...check your local listings)

As for the rest...now that I have another ridiculously stealth and generous gal in my life I can offer you kids twice the advice ;)

They have a great mix of french entrees along with upscale americana: ie their signature "Black Label" burger.
Their status as a former NYC staple is causing unneccesary crowds to flock to their re-opening...making it a better post date (or drunken snack stop) than venue for the main event...adorable either way

What seemed like a promising internet purchase (perhaps the clearance price should have clued me in) turned out to be a huge let down.

I can't even recommend this one to my straight male readers...True there are "no boys allowed" in the video but these women don't even touch. They dance close to each other in showers and bedrooms....you'll see more girl on girl action in a PINK video.

This brand new west village eatery is the perfect love

child of the Plaza's elegant tea room and Alice and

Wonderlands impromptu party...The entire restaraunt is decorated in pink and gold decor, complete with a giant birdcage, not so different from the one in Lindsay Lohan's Rumours Video!

While desserts are their specialty, brunch and a full bar are also available (although no fancy cocktail menu-as of yet)
